Avocado Sourcing from South Africa and Kenya: The 2025 Season Guide
South Africa and Kenya are the two dominant avocado suppliers to the Middle East and Asia. Here is what buyers need to know about the 2025 season, varieties, and pricing.
Avocado consumption in Asia has grown at a compound annual rate of approximately 15 percent over the past decade, driven by the rapid expansion of the cafe culture in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, and Jakarta, and by growing awareness of the fruit's nutritional profile among middle-class consumers across the region.
The supply chain serving Asian markets is complex and geographically diverse. Peru and Mexico are the dominant global exporters, but their distance from Asia, combined with the fruit's sensitivity to ethylene and temperature fluctuations during transit, creates significant quality management challenges. By the time Hass avocados from Peru arrive in Singapore after a three to four week sea journey, the margin for error in ripeness management is extremely narrow.
This has created an opportunity for closer-origin suppliers. Kenya and Tanzania have emerged as competitive sources for the Asian market, offering shorter transit times via direct services to Singapore and Port Klang. Australian avocados, while premium-priced, are increasingly popular in the Japanese and South Korean markets where food safety certification and traceability carry significant weight with buyers.
The ripening infrastructure in Asia has also matured considerably. Dedicated ripening rooms are now standard at major distribution centres in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, allowing importers to receive fruit at a firm, unripe stage and manage the ripening process to match retail demand. This has reduced waste and improved the consistency of the product reaching consumers.
Nagara Global Trading sources avocados from certified farms in Kenya and Peru, with quality inspection conducted at origin before loading. We offer both sea freight and air freight options depending on buyer requirements, and can provide phytosanitary certificates, fumigation records, and cold-chain temperature logs as part of our standard documentation package. Minimum order quantities start at one pallet for air freight and one full container for sea freight.
